Interview with Philip Williams, serial entrepreneur

This episode was a little different than most. Instead of interviewing a current founder we decided to chat with Philip Williams, a serial entrepreneur turned business consultant. We talked about a lot of things, in fact we talked about so many things that interview went 90 minutes long and since we have much more to say we'll be doing a part 2 in a couple weeks.

We dive deep into what it takes to grow and manage an existing business, how to deal with the different personalities of the employees, how to deal with suppliers and clients, how to navigate a company when cash flow gets tight and then we spend a significant amount of time discussing what he has seen and learned as a business consultant. Business consultants primarily have many roles including help a company prevent any major problems, help a company fix any existing problems, help a company grow their top line revenue, help a company bring more of that revenue to the bottom line (be more profitable).

Philip joined the Navy as a young man then went to college and finally to business school. During his career he worked in manufacturing, distribution, engineering consulting, and professional services. In 2004 he became the CEO of an engineering consulting firm and helped the company get into the coveted Inc5000 list from 2007 through 2009 before the company was sold. His next business venture grew over 80% in 8 months before a variety of factors caused him to shut it down. After these experiences he began thinking that other business leaders might benefit from what he had learned so he began consulting to help other entrepreneurs navigate through their own business problems.
